Yoga is a philosophy rooted in mindfulness and conscious intention. It’s the practice of quieting the mind to unite body, mind, and soul. The deeper you dive into your practice, the more you come to understand that the depth of this practice is limitless.
Asana, or the poses, while the most widely known and practiced are only a single aspect of yoga. Yoga embodies an entire way of living, from how you treat yourself and others to your connection with breath and Self to achieve pure enlightenment.
The roots of yoga originate in India around 3,000 B.C. Yoga was, and still is, practiced as a way to unite the body and soul on the path to divine enlightenment. From the time of its origin, the mental and physical benefits of the practice, and the role they played in alleviating symptoms of various diseases and injuries, were brought to light and the practice spread. In the 1920’s, Paramahansa Yogananda introduced yoga to the West. Since then the practice of yoga has spread wildly resulting in the evolution of the original practice into a variety of styles and methodologies.
While this evolution of the yoga can make starting a practice seem overwhelming, it has allowed many to find a practice that best serves their needs. And as you begin your journey into your yoga practice always remember that it is your practice and your body will always tell you what it needs.
