Love yourself, because you are AWESOME!

Compliments are a funny thing. They should make us feel happy and proud of ourselves, but instead about 3 out 5 times when I compliment someone the response that I get is “Thanks…” followed by something negative about themselves. It goes something like this…

Me: “I love your bikini!
Person with the cute bikini: “Thanks! My a$$ is huge right now though”

I’m guilty of this response too, it is what motivated me to write this post. I was looking at the progression of my new company over the past few months and silently congratulating my hard work and achievements, when my brain immediately started thinking ‘you should be doing better, you should be further along by now, look at that person’s Instagram account/blog/etc’ which started snowballing into a series of negative thoughts about myself. Needless to say, I was in a less than enthusiastic mood for the rest of the day.

I’ve learned from this experience that we don’t give ourselves enough credit. What may have seemed like a such a small accomplishment in the grand scheme of things was actually a pretty big personal accomplishment for me and I should have been jumping up and down at my success. And for all the people that I was comparing myself too, I realized that they started in the exact same place that I did. Their success should motivate me to work as hard as they did to get where they are today, not discourage me. The only person holding me back from accomplishing my goals is myself and the sooner I give my mind a positive reset the closer I will be to achieving them.

After this a-ha moment, I got out of my funk and dove back into my work. This time I wasn’t thinking negatively “you should be doing more” I was driven and thinking positively “If I can accomplish this then I can accomplish more”. That small shift from ‘should’ to ‘can’ made such a difference in my mood and productivity.

Let’s stop giving ourselves a hard time and become our biggest fans! Shift the negativity to productivity, the comparisons to motivation, the doubt to self-love, and the worry to excitement. I don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow, next year, or even in the next 5 minutes, but I know that if I keep an open mind and an open heart  I will accomplish things that I never knew that I could.  Trust yourself, this is your journey so get out of your own way and start being the awesome human that you know that you are!
