Don’t let the expectations from your past stop you from your future…what ever it may be. We are not the same person that we were 20 years ago, 5 years ago, hell even 5 minutes ago, so why should our goals stay the same?

YOU ARE HERE, NOW

So be here, NOW.

This is extremely difficult for many of us, myself included. We are constantly living in the past trying to achieve goals for a future that no longer serves us. This can make us feel stuck and the harsh reality is that as long as we hold onto this part of our past we are stuck.

But as our deepest passions start to rise to the surface we are in the midst of becoming our truest selves.  Stop holding onto your past and allow these feelings to become so strong that you can no longer ignore them. Allow yourself to face what you truly feel. Take a moment to sit with these feelings and recognize each one as it passes. Ask yourself what is it that you truly want.

There is a part of us, lingering at the surface of our subconscious, that feels the need to hold onto these expectations that we set our for ourselves years ago. Or worse, it feels the need to hold onto ideas established by others, whether it's a general societal “accepted norm”, or the ideals of our family and friends, coworkers, or bosses. But, as we move through life, accepting who we are in this present moment, we allow ourselves to grow into the person that we are meant to become and accept that these expectations are no longer relevant to our current, truest self.

Release yourself from these expectations, write them down and burn them if you must.  Seriously, this is a powerful visualization tool that will allow you to cleanse yourself of your samskaras so that you can begin to accept the release of what no longer serves you. While you are at it, write down all of your fears and burn those too, because they will do nothing but hold you back. Remember that you are not the same person that set these expectations and your experiences may have already overcome these fears, you just haven’t realized it yet. Are you afraid of failure? Think of all the things that you have succeeded at, rather than dwelling on the things that didn’t have the outcome you intended. Did you really fail, or did you learn something new and change course?

Shift your axis and shift your mindset. There are signs all around us, guiding us towards where we are meant to be. When you are truly ready, you will start to notice these signs and then one day when you have completely freed yourself from the expectations of your past they will be all that you see.

Run, run towards them as fast as you can. Close your eyes if you must and leap, leap with your whole heart. I can promise you that the journey won’t always be smooth, but that leap forward into the unknown will always be worth it. And you will finally realize that you are infinitely better off because you are exactly the person that you are meant to be, right here, right now.

Need some help figuring out what it is you really want. Try this 5-minute meditation:

Find a quiet, comfortable place free from distractions to sit in silence. Set a timer for 5 minutes to allow the mind to completely drift into the present moment without worrying how much time has passed. Rest your hands, palms up on your knees to receive. You may invoke Kubera mudra here if it resonates with you by lightly pressing the tips of the thumb, index, and middle fingers together and resting the ring and pinky fingers on the palm.

Close your eyes and take a deep, full body inhale, allow the outer edges of your mouth to curl up into a gentle smile as you breath in deeply. Gently part the lips and sigh all of the air from your lungs; repeat this cleansing breath 2 or 3 times. When you are ready, breath deeply and evenly (or with a slightly extended exhale) through the nose for the remainder of this mediation.

As you breathe, focus your thoughts within and start to visualize yourself living out your perfect day. Where are you? Who are you with? Where do you go? How do you feel? What do you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel? Open up your senses and transport yourself there. Whenever your mind strays from this perfect place that you are creating, acknowledge what it is that is creating the distraction from your vision. Allow it to pass and return your thoughts to your happy place.

At the end of the mediation, place your left hand on your heart and your right hand on your belly. Inhale deep, filling the body and exhale, part the lips sigh it out. With each inhale think of something in your life that you are grateful for, let that feeling of gratitude fill your heart. With each exhale, release, from deep in the belly, all of the negative thoughts and distractions that no longer serve you. Do this about 3 times. Finally, in your journal, or on your phone, write down the thoughts that distracted you during your meditation. These are the things in your life that no longer serve you, these are the doubts, fears, and expectations that we need to release. And with every meditation you will notice these thoughts less and less because you are closer and closer to living that perfect day.
